Web Design
Web design should never be done for the sake of design, it should be done with specific goals and objectives in mind. When Steve Jobs said "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." He summarised web design perfectly.
As a web design company with several years of experience, we feel qualified to say that most web design projects have historically been approached from the wrong angle.
Unsurprisingly, design isn't just about what looks good ... it's about what works!
Approach
Before our web design team get busy, we look at the business as a whole and draw up a business case document. This provides everyone with an overview of our goals and objectives and ensures that both ourselves and our client understand the timings and who is responsible for what etc.
With the above in mind, we take the business case document agreed and evolve this into a specification. The first part of this specification is a web design brief.
The web design brief is decided by evaluating the following core principals:
- The scenario. We start by considering the company we're working for and what it is they are looking to achieve. We look at your existing branding, strengths, weaknesses, where you excel and how you are different. We look at the competition and how they have approached the problem and what we can learn from them (both positively and negatively!)
- The target audience. At the end of the day, web design is all about the users. We try and work up a target profile to ensure we are designing a web site that is easy to use and applicable for the audience in question. Age, sex, technical savvy and linguistic ability are key ... there is no point designing a web site that is full of slick gadgets and gizmos if you are aiming the site at an that is not technically adept. Similarly, sites aimed at a young audience often have to be fairly advanced to grab attention.
- The end result. With the above points complete, we now know where we are and who we're dealing with...now all we need to know is where we're trying to get to! Good web design presents information well, great web design succeeds in achieving an objective.
